One Man, One Boat, 4000 Miles!!!

Tropic 4 Cancer Trans Atlantic challenge is an expedition to sail single-handed 4000 miles across the Atlantic, from the western seaboard of Africa to Antigua. Fund Raising

The Tropic 4 Cancer expedition is raising money for two good causes: Sobell House and Sail 4 Cancer.

Richard’s mother spent her last few weeks in the care of Sobell House, passing away on the 26th of October 2011. The caring environment offered by Sobell House to was amazing. Since his Mum died, Richard has always felt the need to give something back.

Richard has been involved in fund raising projects for Sail 4 Cancer since 2003.

Sobell House

Sobell House offers expert care and support to those suffering with advanced or progressive life limiting illness. It is located on the Churchill Hospital site belonging to the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust.

Multiprofessional care and support is provided in 18 bedded inpatient unit, day centre, patient’s homes and in the acute Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals. Outpatient clinics are also run at Sobell House as well as some of the Community Hospitals throughout the county.

The dedicated building with purpose built amenities is designed as a light and contemporary space that is pleasing and calm, accommodating options for care in different settings, including the provision of privacy, companionship, social interaction, group work and therapeutic interventions. Once referred, all services are available to patients and families so that we can meet their individual needs and support well being.

Sail 4 Cancer

www.sail4cancer.org/

Sail 4 Cancer was set up in 2001 by a group of keen sailors who had all lost a close friend or relative to cancer.

Sail 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of water based respite days and holidays for families affected by cancer. The charity also makes grants to cancer care centres and funds research into the positive effects of exercise (e.g. sailing) and how it can help prevent cancer and aid recovery post diagnosis.

From the moment you are diagnosed with cancer your life is taken over by hospital visits, treatments, tests, uncertainty, and often, financial worries. For a day or a few weeks, Sail 4 Cancer takes cancer patients and their families away from the disease and the nightmare that they are living through.

How your donations will be used

Donations will be used to fund a research initiative run by Sobell House in Oxford which aims to educate, empower and support the lay carers (family & friends) of cancer patients. In addition, Sail 4 Cancer will establish a Sobell House Respite Fund, which will provide appropriate respite holidays and activities for patients and carers involved in the scheme. This initiative is designed to pilot and test interventions that fit into the National End of Life Care Strategy.

Donations of any amount are very welcome. Each donation of £10 (or multiples of £10) will also have a designated mile of the voyage attributed to you (or whoever you choose). You will receive a ‘name check’ in the daily log on the day your mile is sailed.

100% of the money you donate will go to Sail 4 Cancer and Sobell House.

All funds are being equally divided between Sail 4 Cancer and Sobell House.
